May 23 Day 16
Today we went to church at a stake center adjacent to the Preston Temple. THe Church owns a large plot of land that includes the church, the temple, and an MTC. It was so nice to be in familiar surroundings. The people were very friendly, and even asked us to say the prayers in Sunday School. They are just like the members back home, only with a thick English accent. THe accent up here is a bit different from down south, especially for those people who have lived here all of their lives.
After church, we another manor home, Grawthorpe Hall, much smaller than previous ones we have seen, but still very interesting. THen we went to the town of Barrowford, where my great grandfather, Samuel Rose Parkinson was born. We found an old ruined church with a cemetary on its grounds. This place has been neglected and is overgrown with bushes and trees. Many of the gravestones were hard to read and overgrown with vegetation, but one stood out and had the name "Berry" on it. It contained several family members' names. I seem to remember that Samuel Rose Parkinson's grandfather's name was Berry, so seeing this gravestone sparked my interest. THeir probably cousins of ours. I took a picture of the gravestone and will compare with our geneology.
We are situated in the beautiful Lancashire countryside. We are surrounded by farms and hills. Our accommodations are very comfortable, large enough to invite some of you over to stay, if you could only get here. Even though we are having a wonderful time, we are missing you all.
